Re: Pegging basics: pairs vs runs decisions
During pegging I freeze up when I can make a pair or set up a run. Any general rule to decide?

I take the points when they are safe. A pair is 2 now, but it can invite a triple for 6. If you think they have the third card, avoid pairing.
Runs are usually safer because they are harder to extend, unless you are building a 3-4-5 and your opponent is loaded with low cards.
Also think about the count. If you leave 21 or 26 you can get trapped into a 31.
Playing a 5 when the count is 10 is a bad gift unless you are setting your own 15.
Last card is still a point, so sometimes a safe low card is better than chasing a run and giving up go.
